VERY RARE AND FINE DISPLAY ALSTONITE FROM THE TYPE LOCALITY OF THE HIGH CROSS VEIN,BROWNLEY HILL MINE,BLOOMSBERRY LEVEL, NENTHEAD,ALSTON MOOR, CUMBERLAND.
Fine very large Alstonite crystals, upto 1.5 cms, surrounded by Hydromagnesite crystal clusters in a pocket, set white and pink Baryte matrix. 7.5 cms wide by 6 cms high by 3.5 cms.
Recovered underground in the 1990's from the very remote and dangerous 1840's lead workings at the actual type location,of the High Cross Vein in the Brownley Hill Mine, via the Bloomsberry Level,Nenthead,Alston Moor,Cumberland.
In the 1970's I visited this part of the mine with Richard Barstow, and Tony Walshaw-we descended 250 feet from the surface into these incredible old workings where no one had been for years- there were the original pony hoof-prints in the dried mud on the haulage levels and chalked miners' names and dates on the walls from the 1840's. A wonderful, amazing and profound experience.
